What to expect from a hair restoration course

Consultation & preparation

Wash your hair on the morning of treatment and arrive with no styling products on the scalp. Avoid alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen and fish oil for 48 hours beforehand to reduce bruising. If your hair loss is sudden or patchy, see your GP first so any underlying cause is checked before you invest in a course.

What causes thinning hair, and what can be treated?

The most common cause in both men and women is pattern hair loss, where follicles gradually shrink under the influence of hormones and genetics and produce finer, shorter hairs. Thinning can also follow pregnancy, the menopause, illness, stress, low iron or thyroid problems. In-clinic treatment suits gradual, early-stage thinning where follicles are still active. Sudden, patchy or unexplained loss, or a scalp that is sore, scaly or inflamed, needs a GP first so any underlying cause is found and treated.

Polynucleotides for the scalp

Polynucleotides are purified fragments of DNA in a sterile gel. Injected in small amounts across the thinning area, they hydrate the tissue, calm inflammation around the follicle and stimulate the cells that support hair growth, helping more hairs move into their active phase. Helena plans a course of three to four sessions every four weeks, priced from £400 per session. Maintenance after the course depends on how your hair progresses and is agreed with you at review.

Microneedling for the scalp

A motorised pen with fine needles creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the scalp. That small injury increases blood flow to the area and triggers the release of growth factors, and it also allows any solution applied at the same time to reach deeper. Helena often combines scalp microneedling with polynucleotides in a single appointment. It is priced from £300 per session, and the maintenance interval depends on your progression.

What results can I realistically expect?

Hair grows slowly, so this is a patient treatment. Reduced shedding is often the first sign, within the first couple of months.
