Microneedling
Microneedling in Marylebone, London: a course of controlled micro-injuries that prompts your skin to rebuild its own collagen, used for texture, fine lines, enlarged pores and acne scarring on the face, and for early-stage thinning on the scalp.
The short answer
What is microneedling?
Microneedling uses a sterile device with very fine needles to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. The skin responds to that small injury by producing new collagen and elastin, so texture gradually smooths, pores tighten and fine lines soften over the weeks that follow. Helena uses it on the face for skin quality and acne scarring, and on the scalp as part of a hair restoration plan. Results vary between individuals, and skin regeneration needs at least three months to show its full effect.

Patient journey
What to expect from a microneedling course
Consultation & preparation
Stop retinoids, exfoliating acids and vitamin C serums three days before treatment, and avoid sun exposure or self-tan on the area for a week. Arrive with clean skin and no makeup. If you have a history of cold sores, tell Helena at consultation so cover can be arranged in advance.
During treatment
Aftercare
Your skin will look pink for 24 to 48 hours and may feel tight or flake lightly for a few days. Use only the gentle cleanser and moisturiser Helena recommends for the first 48 hours, avoid makeup for 24 hours, and wear SPF 50 daily while the skin settles. Sessions are spaced four weeks apart.

FAQ
Microneedling FAQs
Does microneedling hurt?
Most people describe it as a light scratching or vibrating sensation rather than pain. Helena applies a numbing cream for around 20 minutes before treatment, which takes the edge off. Sensitivity varies between individuals and by area: the forehead and hairline feel more than the cheeks. The treatment itself takes around 30 minutes.
How soon will I see results from microneedling?
Skin usually looks brighter within a week once the pinkness settles, but the real change comes from new collagen, which builds slowly. Allow at least three months after your course for the full result on texture and fine lines. Scalp treatment is slower again because hair grows in cycles; give it three to six months.
What is the downtime after microneedling?
Expect your skin to look pink or lightly sunburnt for 24 to 48 hours, with some tightness and fine flaking over the following days. Most people return to work the next day. Avoid makeup for 24 hours, skip the gym and saunas for a day, and wear a high-factor sunscreen while your skin settles.
Can microneedling help acne scarring?
Yes, for the shallow, rolling type of scarring that follows acne. The micro-channels break up tethered scar tissue and encourage new collagen to fill the depression from underneath. Deep ice-pick scars respond less well and may need a different approach. Helena will assess your scarring at consultation and be honest about what a course can realistically do.
Can I combine microneedling with other treatments?
Yes, and Helena often does. The open channels created by the needles let exosomes or mesotherapy solutions reach deeper into the skin, so the two are usually done together in one appointment. Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are spaced at least two weeks either side, and chemical peels are planned as a separate step in your journey.
